WHOLE WOMAN’S HEALTH OF THE TWIN CITIES LEADERSHIP TEAM STATEMENT
ON THE MURDER OF DAUNTE WRIGHT

"In our work at Whole Woman’s Health, we serve people at some of their most vulnerable and challenged times and we are deeply committed to caring for our patients as they make decisions about pregnancy, health, and parenting. We are deeply supportive of the tenants of the Reproductive Justice framework – this includes support for decision making around pregnancy and parenting and includes a vision for our ability to build the families we choose to build and to parent without violence.

Police brutality is a reproductive health and justice issue. The people we serve every day in our Twin Cities clinic deserve to live without this violence. As do our staff members. And so do both of us – two Black moms running your local abortion clinic."

That was the conclusion of a statement by the leadership team at WWH-Twin CitiesAngelika Viewins-Medearis, Manger and Kiki Stimage, Clinical Coordinator, posted on their blog one week ago. Start from the beginning...

Study to examine the effect of police violence on the birth outcomes
for Black infants

Associate Professor Rachel Hardeman has launched a first-of-its-kind, five-year study to investigate the association between racialized police violence and the occurrence of preterm birth and low birth weight among Black infants.

"“My earlier research assessing racialized police violence as a form of stress for Black women of reproductive age demonstrates that the unpredictable but persistent possibility of racialized police violence in one’s community is a debilitating burden disproportionately borne by Black women and their families,” says Hardeman. “I recently found that simply living in a neighborhood that experiences high levels of police contact is significantly associated with PTB for Black and white women.”"

That was from a news story by Charlie Plain, posted a week ago on The University of Minnesota School of Public Health's site. It includes the aims of Professor Hardeman's five-year study and more.

April 21, 7pm ET | Next APRN Cluster

The Healing Circle + Healing Narrative

Healing Circle + Healing Narrative was started by three coworkers at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx after losing a colleague to COVID-19 in spring of 2020. This space, held by a racially diverse co-facilitator trio, explores radical truth-telling of personal stories in an effort to know each other and reframe structural norms via authentic relationships with the aspiration of actualizing collective liberation and dismantling white supremacy. On April 21st, using music, writing, storytelling, and discussion, this group will lead the APRN Cluster in our own virtual Healing Circle.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

How to support loved ones during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and beyond, according to experts

Plus, a list of resources that can be helpful for everyone

"Although some survivors may be vocal and comfortable participating in Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it’s not uncommon for others to steer clear.

“Talking about sexual assault, whether it’s their specific case or just general awareness, can be really, really painful,” Storm says. “As an ally, you may be all about Sexual Assault Awareness Month, attending events and posting to social media. And that’s great. But be mindful that survivors in your circle might not be as zealous about it.”

Be careful not to place expectations or pressure on others, experts say. There are numerous reasons people choose not to get involved — they may wish to avoid triggers, they may have concerns about safety and privacy, or they may simply be exhausted. You don’t need to know their reason to respect their choice.""

That excerpt was from Sunny Fitzgerald's analysis, posted at the beginning of this month on The Lily. Find out how you may be able to support yourself and/or others.

April is STD Awareness Month

Strides Against HIV/AIDS Falter, Especially in the South, as Nation Battles Covid

"The exact impact of one pandemic on the other is still coming into focus, but preliminary evidence is disturbing experts who have celebrated the enormous strides in HIV treatment. While the shift in priorities is nationwide, delays in testing and treatment carry particularly grievous risks in Southern states, now the epicenter of the nation’s HIV crisis.

“This is a major derailing,” said Dr. Carlos del Rio, a professor of medicine at Emory University in Atlanta and head of the Emory AIDS International Training and Research Program. “There will be damage. The question is, how much?”

That was from Sarah Varney's article, posted today on KHN. Find out more.
