Abortion Clinic Protests Are Still Happening in the Pandemic: ‘They Accost Patients Face to Face’

“They don’t social distance. They block, stalk, push, shove, talk, scream. It’s business as usual out there for them.”

"In the months since the coronavirus pandemic upended life across the United States, public gatherings have largely vanished thanks to stay-at-home orders and Centers for Disease Control warnings about the dangers of being near other people. In Benzin’s home state of Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has explicitly suspended all “in-person activities that are not necessary to sustain or protect life.”

But workers at abortion clinics across the country told VICE News that protesters are still showing up at their doors. They often ignore the CDC guidelines meant to keep people safe from COVID-19, such as staying six feet apart from one another and wearing masks, these workers said. Clinics have also told the National Abortion Federation, the professional organization for U.S. abortion providers, that they’re now facing increasing online harassment and receiving more mail from abortion opponents.

“People have time on their hands,” explained National Abortion Federation President Katherine Ragsdale."

That was from an article by Carter Sherman, posted yesterday on Vice. Yet another example of 'pro-life' meaning nothing of the sort.

Save the Date!

Join NSRH for a virtual book talk with Carole Joffe and David S. Cohen to discuss their new book Obstacle Course: The Everyday Struggle to Get an Abortion in America. Obstacle Course tells the story of abortion in America, capturing a disturbing reality of insurmountable barriers people face when trying to exercise their legal rights to medical services. This conversation will be moderated by Susan Yanow.

A Nurse With One Lung Had COVID-19. Other Nurses Saved Her.

In the coronavirus era, nurses are called heroes. Sometimes, the lives they save are those of other nurses.

"Adell-O’Neal, 53, has asthma and one lung, the other having been removed along with a tumor while she was a nursing student. And for 12 days in a hospital bed at Northwestern, she fought against COVID-19.

Since the coronavirus has swept through the country, nurses have been praised as heroes for their role in fighting the pandemic. But nurses who care for patients with COVID-19 have also become patients — and sometimes, casualties — themselves. The relationships nurses have with their patients who are nurses can be emotional and complicated. They can also be cathartic.

As one of the nurses who cared for Adell-O’Neal put it: “She just understood, like, what I was going through.”"

That was an excerpt from Logan Jaffe's piece, posted last week on ProPublica Illinois. Read the heartfelt story of nurses saving one of their own.

Gender-Neutral Pronouns 101: Everything You've Always Wanted to Know

From how to use them to their surprising history, here are answers to your most common questions about gender-neutral pronouns.

"Gender-neutral pronouns aren’t a fad, and they aren’t new, either. Throughout the history of the English language, pronouns have evolved to adapt to the circumstances of the times. The plural “they” shifted to a singular “they” several centuries ago, when writers went in search of a more gender-neutral pronoun; multiple gender-neutral pronouns have come about since and been embraced by members of the trans and nonbinary communities. Third-person pronouns like “xe/xem” or “ze/zim” are growing increasingly popular. Likewise, it is becoming more common for people to avoid using pronouns altogether, and instead just use their name in all circumstances.

This gain in popularity reflects both a need for more inclusivity in the language we use and a desire to keep us all connected. When trans people like myself hear others use gender-neutral pronouns, whether in regards to other people or when referring to us directly, we feel seen. It’s an acknowledgement and recognition of our existence. The usage of these pronouns and names validates both our identities and experiences, and helps us to continue feeling connected to others, as the culture surrounding us continues to shift and evolve."

Check out Devin-Norelle's entire article, posted last week on them. It's a very deep-dive into gender neutral pronouns and their usage.

Coronavirus may never go away, even with a vaccine

Embracing that reality is crucial to the next phase of America’s pandemic response, experts say.

"Increasingly, leading experts believe many Americans won’t make the shift toward long-range thinking until the virus spreads more widely and affects someone they know.

“It’s like people who drive too fast. They come upon the scene of an accident, and for a little while, they drive more carefully, but soon they’re back to speeding again,” said Michael T. Osterholm, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy.

“Contrast that with people who have lost someone to drunk driving,” he said. “It mobilizes them and becomes a cause for them. Eventually, everyone is going to know someone who got infected or died from this virus."

That was the conclusion of an article by William Wan and Carolyn Y. Johnson, posted today on The Washington Post. The authors asked public health experts about the current and future state of 'COVID affairs.' It's a disturbing and thought-provoking read.
